Tina Fey + Melissa Villasenor Sing System of a Down on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Tina Fey is a name that may never have been mentioned in the same sentence as System of a Down -- until this weekend. The superstar comedienne hosted the season finale of Saturday Night Live this weekend, and in one sketch she belted System of a Down's "Chop Suey!" alongside current featured cast player Melissa Villaseñor.
The two played a mother-daughter team performing in a high school talent show. They started with an unsuccessful cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" -- which the rebellious Villaseñor purposely messes up by inserting different lyrics. But after a couple failed attempts the two bond and find their groove with the System hit from the band's 2001 album Toxicity. "I think I love it," says Fey's character, stepping into the the song with the familiar "You wanted to" inserts. Watch the sketch above.
In October, System of a Down will play five shows on the West Coast, but they probably won't perform any new songs since any efforts they've made to work on the follow-up to 2005 releases Hypnotize and Mezmerize have been unsuccessful.
System guitarist Daron Malakian recently told Kerrang! he'd love to be making [new] music with System of a Down, but "as of right now System's not making albums."
However, that hasn't kept the multi-talented musician out of the studio. His second album with Scars on Broadway, Dictator, comes out July 20. In April he released a video for the new track "Lives."
"I think the Scars stuff tends to take more of a rock direction, even though I would say there’s a lot of material on this album that I think has more of a System of a Down flavor in it than maybe the first Scars album did," he said.
