Mastodon took the stage on Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night, as the Atlanta rockers performed ‘The Motherload’ off their latest album ‘Once More ‘Round The Sun.’

Guitarist Brent Hinds rocked a giant faux afro for the performance, kicking it off with a cowbell count off, tipping a hat at the famous ‘More Cowbell’ skit on 'Saturday Night Live' made famous by Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. The band tore through the rapid-fire song brilliantly (watch above).

Meanwhile, the band’s video for ‘The Motherload’ has created some controversy for its use of sexual imagry including women twerking in super slow-motion. Drummer Brann Dailor said he was “really upset” when the “sexist” label was thrown at the band. He defended the clip saying, “It’s a music video and it’s really not supposed to be something that gets people this upset because this was really a fun thing that doesn’t really mean too much. It’s not to be taken so seriously.”

Even one of the female twerkers in the video defended the band writing, "While most people seemed to 'get' the band’s shout out to their hometown, Atlanta, others called it racist and sexist." In a long blog post, the dancer named Jade added the video shows, "Women having fun with each other. Praising each other. A glimpse into what we do and that we are bigger than what we do."
