Ex-Pennywise Vocalist Jim Lindberg Talks About Being a Punk Rock Dad in ‘The Other F Word’
The last few years have seen a host of stellar music documentaries hitting the film festival circuit. Next month one of Noisecreep's favorite docs will be hitting select cities. 'The Other F Word' is a touching look into punk rock fatherhood featuring candid interviews with musicians like Fat Mike (NOFX), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion), and Mark Hoppus (Blink-182).
'The Other F Word' was inspired by former Pennywise and current The Black Pacific vocalist Jim Lindberg's 2007 book, 'Punk Rock Dad: No Rules, Just Real Life.' A must-read for any young parent into the kind of music Noisecreep covers.
Noisecreep asked Lindberg what the reaction has been to his book and to his appearance in 'The Other F Word' while he was getting ready to play a show with The Black Pacific.
"I think it's the kind of situation where the older punk fans that have kids automatically connect with what we're talking about in the film and obviously, my book. I remember when I did promotion for my book I had people telling me that they felt like reading it was like reading their own diary. But I also think people that don't have kids should check out the film because it's an interesting look at people that are in a unique situation," says the punk veteran about 'The Other F Word.'

Lindberg has three kids (ages 14, 12, 7) and Noisecreep asked him what they thought about their dad's career in punk music. "The thing is, I've never tried to force my kind of music onto them. If they're in the car with me, I listen to the stuff I like. If they hear something they enjoy – like The Clash or Blondie – they'll sometimes ask me to play it again. It's not like I ever throw on Minor Threat or something like that when they're with me [laughs].
"But yeah, they like their own kind of music and what their friends are into. Maybe when they're a bit older and have some angst in them, they'll appreciate dad's music a little more. I'm perfectly happy with them listening to the Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift for now. I guess if they had issues, they might be listening to Gwar, or something like that," laughs Lindberg.
'The Other F Word' is a rare glimpse into the lives of various musicians juggling fatherhood and the touring life. "I think Andrea and Christian did a great job with the film. It's fun to watch 'Cribs' and see how multi-millionaire rock stars live, but if you want to see working-class musicians and how they live, this film shows that in a realistic way. The film handles that side of it in a poignant way."
