The debut album from former Immortal frontman Abbath is almost here and another song has been released off the namesake record. "Ashes of the Damned" proudly boasts more of the trademark riffing and roaring guitar tone fans have come to expect from one of black metal's most revered musicians. Abbath will be out Jan. 22 on Season of Mist, but for now, bask in the riff frenzy of the new track!

A clean guitar briefly opens "Ashes of the Damned," playing a melody that dominates most of the song. With a quick slide, Abbath lays waste to his guitar as former drummer Creature (Kevin Foley) blasts away from behind the kit as if the band were sonically trying to tunnel through the ice that permeates the landscape of their Norwegian homeland. Lush cord progressions help fuel the triumphant moments of the track and lend a hand to the somewhat out of place horns that make sporadic appearances.

Having already released "Count the Dead" and "Winter Bane" along with having played "Fenrir Hunts" live, the album is shaping up to be a remarkable first effort from the estranged Immortal vocalist. He split with the legendary Norwegian act following a legal dispute with former members Demonaz and Horgh over rights to the moniker. With one of the most recognizable faces in the scene, thanks to his corpse paint and the Internet's sense of humor, Abbath capitalized on his popular alias.

Abbath will be headlining the 2016 Decibel Magazine tour with High on Fire, Skeletonwitch and Tribulation. Dates for the trek can be found in our 2016 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
