Hardcore music, punk rock and metal are alive and well in Brooklyn. Over the weekend heavy music and fusions of culture were celebrated during this year’s AfroPunk Fest which included performances by Wicked Wisdom, Unlocking the Truth, Death, Trash Talk and Living Colour.

Fans were infected with Wicked Wisdom on the first day of the festival. The band graced the Green Stage for their first performance together in six years. Some may know vocalist Jada Pinkett-Smith as an actress or Will Smith’s wife but as a frontwoman she is a force onstage. The band as a whole were solid onstage and one can only hope this performance was a step in the direction of more touring and new music.

Unlocking the Truth were among the youngest performers of the day but their heavy sound and riffs are an inspiration to music fans of all ages. The trio of sixth graders and best friends won over the hearts of many with their instrumental metal sound.

On the second day Living Colour were among one of the main heavy acts that took the Green Stage. The group kicked off their set with their anthem ‘Cult of Personality.’ The legendary band played AfroPunk Fest in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut record ‘Vivid.’

California hardcore punk band Trash Talk had the craziest set of the entire weekend. Vocalist Lee Spielman didn’t spend as much time onstage as he did on the barricade getting up close and personal with both fans and with security guards.

Earlier in the day iconic protopunk band Death took the stage. The trio of brothers are still going strong and they continue to play a genre that they helped pioneer with gusto and passion.
