Trivium’s Matt Heafy Takes His Turn at Toto ‘Africa’ Cover
Matt Heafy might be the first person to ever cover Toto's "Africa" while wearing a Coroner shirt. The 1982 hit has enjoyed a massive surge in popularity over the last couple years, spurring a litany of covers. Weezer have already released a cover of the song and now the Trivium frontman takes his turn in the video above.
Last year, the Heaf was churning out a wide range of acoustic covers and here he switches from soothing clean-toned moments to full-on 7-string distortion. The cover starts off with some light strumming and timid clean singing, but the singer gives "Africa" a jolt of energy as the chorus comes, reaching into his upper register for the high notes and even working in some screams during the refrain alongside chugging rhythms and a brief tremolo-picked black metal section toward the end.
Watching a metal musician work outside of their typical parameters is always interesting and if you're looking for more of Matt Heafy and oddball covers, check out his take on Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time," Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" or enjoy some Christmas in July with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Trivium will head out an another headlining North American tour in support of 2017's The Sin and The Sentence in October. Joining them on the run will be Avatar and Light the Torch and you can see a list of all upcoming stops here.
