Even though Times of Grace is a pretty serious musical venture -- since it's about chronicling depression, misfortune and the strength it takes to rise from the depths -- the creation of 'The Hymn of a Broken Man' was colored with laughter and stupidity. Such is the way of Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, who created the project with ex-Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach after enduring a series of personal hardships, including major back surgery.

"In the studio, it was pretty much completely poop and fart jokes," Dutkiewicz told Noisecreep, then reconsidered. "It was either either dead serious, or it was poop and fart jokes."

"It's a great atmosphere," Leach admitted. "There were moments when I would finish a take and we'd listen back to it and both get chills. But for the most part, if I'm trying to nail a part I'm having trouble with, he would have me laughing so hard I'd be crying."

In addition to cracking jokes and playing the clown, Dutkiewicz -- who produced the album in addition to playing guitars, bass and drums -- engaged in some studio wizardry to further lighten the mood. "One of my favorite things to do is to take a singer's mistakes and collaborate them into one little song," He said. "I'll make crazy grooves out of it."

"And he'd play it before I did the take, so I would have to listen to a minute of this crap before I'm gonna sing the line again," added Leach. "And finally I'm like, 'Adam, seriously, can I do the take without that?' Then he would take my lyric and switch it around and add 'dicks' to it to make fun of me when I screwed up. It was a lot of fun."

'The Hymn of a Broken Man' is out Jan. 18.
