While shoegazers Nebula played Santo's Party House, a couple stops on the L-Train and a borough away, ladies danced to Riotgod with cigarettes in their mouths -- a visual many New Yorkers have forgotten, unless they tread the DIY scene often. The band, which includes Monster Magnet drummer Bob Pantella and bassist Jim Baglino, wailed through tracks despite feedback and an ungrounded cable that caused some ear-throbbing raucousness. A cloud of smoke -- no fog machine here -- appeared, and I knew I'd arrived at Space Mountain.

My Space Mountain adventure began last week, when I was invited to see a friend's band -- a Brooklyn stoner rock band called the Dip -- at the loft space. I expected it to be like the rest of artists' living spaces in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Yet, this place had a real stage built into the living room. And a furry sex-swing swung above the tall stage. That's because the space is also used for BDSM parties, case you're curious. Classic stoner rock records and posters decorated the large walls. This includes a small paper flyer for a show at the Albion/Batcave (currently Club Rebel) where Mastodon opened for High on Fire, not to mention an oversized poster for a Kyuss tour circa 1997.

Sadly, the Aug. 22 show was the last held at the space. Owner and former tour/show booker (working with bands like the Stone Brothers, Nebula and High on Fire) Quentin Regos will be disassembling the venue/apartment and moving soon. So this show was an extra special treat.

"We want to thank everyone who is sticking around," the lead singer said about the technical issues they were having.

A fan -- who was at their aide when a mic cable stopped working -- shot back, "No, thank you!"

And as painful as the sound issues were at times, I couldn't walk away from the fun set. Riotgod provided heavy rock you can sing along and headbang to. They pushed through the fist-raising song '9th Life' when the room began to head-nod in unison.

If you are a Chicago or Bowling Green, Ohio area resident, you have a chance to catch the band in better form (i.e. not in someone's apartment). Make it happen!
