Heavy metal is fractured into dozens of different genres with subgenres existing within each of them. It takes turns in so many different directions and fuses styles together, always creating something new and interesting. But other times it just plugs away with the tried and true styles. The boundlessness of metal is something to be celebrated and Slipknot's Corey Taylor sings the praises of what makes it so much different than every other type of music.

As Slipknot prepared for the Mexican installment of Knotfest, the band took part in a press conference and Taylor spoke at length about what the band means to the fans, his lyrics and where he sees metal going in the future. Transcribed by Blabbermouth, the frontman talked about metal's future, saying, "I think it's gonna go wherever it needs to go. I mean, that's the beautiful thing about metal music. Because there's no real pressure on metal music, it kind of goes where it wants to go. There's always pressure on pop music or hip-hop to go one way or the other, but with metal music, because it's still so underground, it can kind of go wherever it wants to; it has no form."

Continuing, he added, "It can experiment when it wants to. It can go back to a more traditional sound if it wants to, it can go into places that we never expected it to. So I think it's the last form of music that really has no restraint. If I had to say where it was gonna go specifically, I don't know. But that's the exciting thing. Because when you hear it, you're, like, 'Oh, that's f--king amazing!' So you just never know."

Anxiously awaiting to see what band will propel the genre next, Taylor went on, "You're kind of looking for the next band to take it and kind of channel their own voice through it with no worries about whether or not it's going to be popular or not, because metal music has always been the underdog. So I think that's where it's gonna go next. I don't know where, but I think the next band that really takes it and takes it where it needs to go, it's gonna be exciting."

Slipknot were mentioned in the same breath as pop and hip-hop artists Monday as they have been nominated in two categories in the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. The band is up for Best Metal Performance of 2015 for their song "Custer" and Best Rock Album for .5: The Gray Chapter. The band missed the submission cutoff date of Oct. 1, 2014 last year due to the album's Oct. 19, 2014 release and thus have been nominated in 2015.
