Guns N' Roses fans in Edmonton, Alberta last night (Aug. 30) got a pair of surprises when the band ripped through not one, but two brand new covers in their set, taking on songs by both James Brown and Glen Campbell.

[This is] something we've never played before," frontman Axl Rose begins to say after the group tore through "Sweet Child O' Mine." "It might not be your thing, but, you know, it's just to kind of pay a tribute to someone."

The frontman then adds that it wasn't what the fans thought it would be, referencing a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun," which he says would be played later in the set. Instead, the band bewildered audience by going into "Wichita Lineman," a 1968 hit for country star Glen Campbell, who died earlier this month (Aug. 8). Fan-filmed video for it can be seen below.

The subdued track is easily one of the quietest Guns have played on their 'Not in This Lifetime' tour, with bassist Duff McKagan and Slash sitting down on the steps of the drum riser while the track played, the latter brandishing a black acoustic guitar from which he delivered a tasteful solo.

"For Glen..." Rose said when the track ended, as the band then revved it up a bit with "Used to Love Her." The next surprise came following "November Rain."

"Something else we've never done," Rose says in his introduction. "Our own little arrangement of it... if anybody will f--k up on it it'll be me, but, anyway. We'll give it a go."

GN'R then tore through a rendition of the James Brown classic "I Got You (I Feel Good)," which they were rumored to have tried out in soundcheck multiple times before their intimate gig at the Apollo Theater in New York this past July to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction.

The crowd was into the spirited cover of the 1964 soul-funk hit, fan-filmed video of which can be seen above. At the end, the group went into a bit of an extended jam on the number, with Rose smiling at it's conclusion saying, "Thanks for bearing with us on that."

The show at Commonwealth Stadium was one of the longest on the trek to date, clocking in at three hours and 15 minutes with 32 songs played - 10 of them covers. The tour resumes tomorrow night (Sept. 1) in Vancouver, British Columbia at BC Place.
