Gigantour Hits Los Angeles: Megadeth, Motörhead, Volbeat, Lacuna Coil Triumph (VIDEO)

One of the best bang-for-the-buck metal shows of the year, Gigantour, rolled into a sold-out Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles last week.

The mini-fest, featuring a broad spectrum of sound and styles included the Italian goth metal outfit Lacuna Coil, the Danish rockabilly-metallers Volbeat, and legends Motörhead and Megadeth.

Cristina Scabbia, the lovely siren from Lacuna Coil told Noisecreep, "Gigantour is kicking some serious ass! Just think about the package you can get! Megadeth, Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, hellooo? Playing in venues like the amazing Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal city just adds some coolness to the plate! The L.A. day was the expected plain magic madness, with a show full of energy and the reunion with friends we haven't seen in a while. We had a blast!"

And she had it dead on. Her band kicked things off with a set of whirling symphonic metal that actually had several shows topping moments. Playing a tight, six-song set that included 'Our Truth,' 'Fragile' and 'Spellbound,' the band (which has been around since 1994) was spellbinding and more than set the table for Volbeat.

The Danes held forth with a nice power of their own, darkly thumping through a muscular set that finished with a bit of the band playing a bit of Slayer's 'Raining Blood.'

Then it was time for the venerable Motörhead, featuring the iconic and weatherworn Lemmy Kilmister. Since 1975 they've released more than 20 albums, but his pose at the elevated microphone remains timeless. This is a power trio that's dipped and dyed in old school, fast-paced, churn out the riffs metal that helped invent head banging, and the too-brief 11-song set left everyone wanting more. But they made the most of their time, blasting through 'I Know How to Die,' 'Over the Top,' 'Killed by Death' and their MTV-staple from days gone by, 'Ace of Spades.'

Lemmy's son Paul even played on one number, and was sweetly introduced to the crowd by the grizzled metal pirate.

Finally, it was the mighty Megadeth, whose varied repertoire spun from hard rock to speed metal to heavy metal to thrash to anthemic arena rock. Led by Dave Mustaine, the band delivered a complex set including 'Headcrusher,' 'Foreclosure' and what was a highlight of the show, a blistering duet with Lacuna Coil's Scabbia on 'À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free).'

Guitarist Chris Broderick added his own tasteful and ornate solos to complement Mustaine's fretwork, and by the time the last notes of 'Holy Wars... The Punishment Due' were played, the appreciate crowd went wild. All in all, an incredibly diverse array of music from four unique bands that all delivered – and then some.
