Deftones Pay Tribute To Late Bassist Chi Cheng With Never-Before-Released Track ‘Smile’
One year ago today (April 13), Deftones said goodbye to bassist Chi Cheng, who passed away after a 2008 car accident left him mostly in a coma for four and a half years. On the one year anniversary of his passing, frontman Chino Moreno has posted the unreleased song 'Smile' from Deftones' shelved album 'Eros.'
At the time of Cheng's car accident in November 2008, Deftones were wrapping up work on a new album called 'Eros.' With Cheng in a coma, the band decided not to release the disc, and it has remained shelved ever since. Instead, the next year, they began work on the album 'Diamond Eyes' with bassist Sergio Vega.
Now, with the song 'Smile,' fans can hear one of the last Deftones recordings with Cheng on bass. The tune features sweeping atmospherics and haunting vocals by Moreno.
R.I.P. Chi Cheng. In his honor, listen to the never-before-released Deftones song 'Smile' above.
