Primitive Weapons: NYC Inspired ‘Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons’ — Song Stream

Scott Irvine

As a band, Primitive Weapons are in their infancy. They only formed this past summer and already, their brand of screamy, doomy, artsy Mastodon-like metal has garnered them heaps of love from the metal press and fans.

The band’s debut, the ‘Primitive Weapons’ 7″ EP, comes out March 8th via Shinebox. Noisecreep is thrilled to share a stream of the song ‘Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons.’ Enjoy it now and play it as loud as possible; it’ll make the rafters and lighting fixtures shake.

The band also opened up about the inspiration behind this plate-shifting song.

“During the time Primitive Weapons were writing the 7″, I was working on ‘Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons,'” frontman David Castillo told Noisecreep. “Lyrically, I had a working theme, but couldn’t really nail a chorus to it.”

“That all changed over a beer and a happy accident of a meeting,” Castillo continued. “One day, I was having a beer with my buddies Dan and Billy Keith at the bar Mason Dixon in Manhattan and in walks this dude Derek. They introduce him to me, we strike up a conversation, and it turns out that Derek is a jewelry designer who owns a company called Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons. I thought it was a cool name and he told me the story behind it. One of his favorite writers said that everyone in New York City is either a black sheep or prodigal son. The song [was written about] a time when I was discovering a new life in the city and I knew instantly it would fit perfectly. Funny enough, I have never seen Derek since.”

Consequently, ‘Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons’ is Noisecreep’s favorite track on this 7″. Enjoy.
