Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Says Metallica Ouster Changed His Attitude About Guitar Playing

Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall when two rock greats discuss their craft? Thanks to Fuse, that’s happening with the new digital series titled ‘Metalhead to Head.’ In the latest episode, Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine and Thin Lizzy‘s Ricky Warwick delve into their musical histories.

The Megadeth leader told Warwick, “The reason I picked a Flying V was I was strongly influenced by another guitar player who played a V. He played a different shape, a custom classic Gibson V, and K.K. Downing played a V and to me K.K. was metal. Glenn [Tipton] was really cool. He did all the cool solos … but to me, K.K. really had it going on with that V and it personified, hey, this is a weapon.”

Over time, Mustaine says his playing style evolved. He recalled, “When I was in Metallica, when I would write solos back then, I wrote them out. And then when I left, I totally re-evaluated my guitar playing and went from playing guitar because I loved it to playing guitar because I was pissed.” As Mustaine says at one point about playing, “It’s not how big your pencil is, it’s how you write your name.”

Later on, he delved further into technique and making things your own. He explained, “Playing, for me, doing solos and stuff like that, there’s a lot of technique stuff that people do, they do sweeping and stuff like that and they do a lot of stuff that’s real pretty-looking, but you know what?! After a while, someone sweeping through a whole solo, it’s, like, enough already. I believe that David Gilmour can do more with one note than half of these kids that are out there now that can just do these mind-blowing solos.”
