Maynard James Keenan Documentary Involves Other Aspects of Arizona

Maynard James KeenanThe Maynard James Keenan-focused ‘Blood Into Wine’ documentary focuses on the fact that Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer vocalist Maynard James Keenan is going against the ‘grape’ and making wine in a hot climate that isn’t known for producing wine. That goes along with the singer’s personality, which is to not do what’s expected or even normal.

Documentarian Ryan Page, one of the filmmakers who chronicled Keenan’s winemaking business, pointed out to Noisecreep that there are other stimulating threads and theses in the documentary.

“Maynard’s living in this ghost town where he discovered this wild vine that was from a Native American vine. It’s a mystery grape,” Page said. “He grabbed it off the side of a tree in a dilapidated house, put it in his vineyard, grew wine grapes and then they DNA tested them. Maynard opens up about a lot of things [like this] in our film.”

Something Keenan steers incredibly clear of in the documentary is his work in Tool, which of course, people are more than curious about. “He is specific about not getting into Tool stuff,” Page revealed. “I don’t think any of those guys do. He is more open about his other musical projects. Tool is this sacred thing to these guys in Tool. We got into the way he approaches his art. Winemaking as an outgrowth of that.”

Page also claims that one of the coolest passages in their film centers on Keenan’s mother Judith, who is also the namesake of an A Perfect Circle song. “His mother had an anyeurism when he was young, and he spread her ashes at the base of these vines,” Page said. “He gets emotional about his mother, but it’s a beautiful story. She travels the world in these wine bottles.”

‘Blood Into Wine’ is scheduled for a 2010 release.
