"A big focus on this record is the guitar," says Ben Falgoust of Goatwhore's newest release 'Carving Out the Eyes of God.' "With the new record, we brought the guitars up dramatically. Not so much that it is burying everything else, but we wanted the feel like earlier metal records – like Metallica's 'Ride the Lightning' – where the guitar was relevant. That's what made it metal was the guitar."

Falgoust admits disappointment in a lot of modern metal records. He thinks the guitars are buried and the drums and vocals too prominent, therefore losing the true essence of metal."We're not trying to bury everything else, but there's a big reason why guitar tone makes a band metal. Why bury it and put it behind everything else?"

As Goatwhore worked to shift the focus back to the guitar, there was angst - at least for Falgoust. The rigors of recording are very different from the road - where every mistake is magnified. "I hate recording, I really do. There's something about recording and playing live that are two totally different things. The thing about recording is that...you try to go in and pick everything out you want because it is magnified so much. In a live setting, you just go and have a good time and you do as you like."

See Goatwhore live this summer as part of the Conquer & Curse tour.
