‘Ghost Adventures’ Host Zak Bagans on Connecting With ‘Spirit Voices’ of the Deceased on New Album

Zak Bagans, host of Travel Channel's popular paranormal series Ghost Adventures, has joined forces with Lords of Acid's Praga Khan for a creepfest they've christened, NecroFusion. The album is due to hit stores on Oct. 23, just in time for Halloween.

Each one of the eleven tracks on NecroFusion not only tells the story of a departed soul who, has not crossed over yet, but also includes an actual audio message from the spirit. Armed with a special recording device, Bagans has encountered inhabitants of the spirit world during his paranormal investigations, reached out to communicate with and question them, and then, when a spirit chose to communicate, he recorded the spirits' EVP (electronic voice phenomenon).

In 1999, actor David Strickland, known for his role on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan, committed suicide in room 20 of the Oasis Motel in Las Vegas. Over a decade later, Bagans spent hours in that very room trying to connect with Strickland's departed soul for Ghost Adventures. The results of that investigation can be heard below on the track "Room 20" from NecroFusion.

Noisecreep recently spoke with Bagans about this otherworldly project.

To your knowledge, has anyone ever done this – incorporated the actual words of spirits on an album?

I'm pretty sure this is the first time this has ever happened.

What inspired the project?

I've had some very close encounters with the other side. They chose me to do this – I was doing this all before a TV show. They chose me to communicate with them; they chose my path as a paranormal. And we have to look at technology as a whole right now. It is so advanced and moving so fast and the digital age is allowing us to take a deeper look into the other side. This technology I have found with my team is amazing, and we are figuring out how to tap into the frequencies that these spirits speak. And for all the skeptics out here, who I love addressing, yes, we are hearing voices from the dead. And that has fueled me to present their voices with the medium that's the best way to convey an idea – through music. It's the most powerful way to send a message. It's blown me away and blown lot of other people away. The level of what is coming through is amazing. And I want people to hear what these spirits are saying. I know a lot of people live in fear of this stuff. Me too. Because we all fear death. But what I am doing is taking these voices so we can learn from them. It is mind-blowing, Crystal clear spirit voices.

Do you think the voices want to be heard by a large audience?

Yes. Can you imagine being a spirit stuck in purgatory, for 20 years? 100 years? If you watch the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze, you see an accurate portrayal of what I believe. Spirits are stuck here. They want to convey a message to the living but they can't – they are on a different frequency. But when they are heard, they are helping both us and themselves. They just want to be heard. And I think I am at the pinnacle of communication with the spirits with the device I use- the SB7 Spirit Box. With the music, I feel like I help these spirits, giving them a voice through music. In one of the songs, "Sing With Me," I asked a spirit to sing, and a female voice came through, singing! That was one of the most amazing moments for me ever.

And it's not all gentle, peaceful stuff you recorded, right?

Right. There's a lot of dark, bad, scary stuff over there, too. And I've been a victim of that. I had a full exorcism performed on me from an archbishop. But this is what I do. If anything ever happens to me, I want people to be aware of this other world and so this album will help all of it live on after me. I just want people to listen and know that this is real. I'll do anything I can to give these spirits a bigger voice. I'm helping the living by letting them know the spirits are here talking to us. And helping the dead by giving them a platform. Since learning I could do this, my life has been very different.

Praga Khan's musical style is very intense, too.

He's amazing. The tone, the music, the intensity – he created the perfect beats and textures to set the right emotional level for theses voices. What's weird is, when I was in high school, I was addicted to the Lords of Acid. My favorite band, all that hardcore and dirty industrial music. So who would have thought I'd be collaborating with Lords of Acid after Praga learned he had spirits present in his studio? I feel like every single day my life takes a new, amazing turn.
