Those of you who have spent any significant amount of time on Facebook have surely responded to the iPod Roulette challenge before. You know, you put your iPod (or other MP3 player) on random shuffle, hit play, write down whatever pops up, forward to the next song, write that one down, too, and then repeat until you've listed 20 or so songs. Providing you haven't cheated and excluded something out of embarrassment, the list should present an interesting glance into your listening habits, personality and perhaps mental instability.

We at Noiescreep thought it would be edifying (or at least amusing) to put some metal musicians to the test. So we sent out a friendly invitation to a bunch of folks from all stripes of metal and waited for their responses. This week we've got a pretty insightful list back from God Forbid guitarist Doc Coyle, a man who's pretty much metal to the core – but enjoys a bit of R&B, as well as mainstream and lightweight alternative rock when his neck's sore from too much headbanging.

"I was excited to do this because I think I have a fairly impressive iPod," Coyle tells Noisecreep. "If this playlist came up when I was jamming out, I don't think I would've fast-forwarded once – with the exception of the audiobooks (we're talking about rocking out, here)."

We always knew that Doc could rock, but we learned that he's also a pretty cultured fellow. When he's got eyestrain from too many strobes or vertigo from too much Jagermeister, he can plug in and listen to president Barack Obama read his book 'Dreams of My Father.' Or if he's in the mood for some abrasive humor, maybe he'll listen to Denis Leary's 'Rehab.' But before we delve too far into pretentious analysis, here's Coyle to give us his take on the 20 tracks that surfaced on his Random Shuffle test.

"I have to say this is a pretty accurate representation of my musical tastes," he says. "Many of my all- time favorite bands are represented, like Metallica, Pantera, and Alice In Chains. I think it also shows that I'm essentially a metal head that enjoys a decent amount of melodic rock and pop/R&B. Usually when I'm at home doing day-to-day normal stuff, I need plenty of metal to keep me sane, and when I'm on the road, metal is usually the last thing I want to hear. Also, I am glad some of my favorite [underrated bands] (i.e. bands I steal riffs from) came up as well.

"Also, I think the audiobook and Denis Leary selections are telling as well," Coyle continues. "I have a ton of comedy on my pod like Chris Rock, George Carlin and Patton Oswalt. That shit is priceless on boring, endless van trips when you're sick of listening to all of your music. The audiobooks are something I fell in love with last year when I was going through a rough phase, and was really concerned with self-improvement. Reading can be so time consuming (but I still do it), I thought I would kill two birds with one stone and listen to audiobooks while I worked out, drove, or did some of the mindless temp jobs I had during time off from the band. Most of the stuff is political or spiritual. You got to feed yo brain, son! I'm not sure if it is better or worse than reading, but I seem to retain much of the information. I definitely recommend Malcom Gladwell. With all of that said, I would be lost without my iPod, and I'm in the market for an upgrade ASAP. iPod Touch, here I come."
