After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and screenings at numerous other film festivals including SXSW, X Japan‘s documentary film We Are X will receive a theatrical release.

The film will be released Oct. 21 in New York and Los Angeles, and then expand across the country. X Japan’s Yoshiki performed at both Sundance and SXSW, and similar eventized concert presentations of the film are planned for We Are X‘s theatrical release.

Drafthouse Films founder Tim League says, “You will not believe the trials and tribulations that the arena-filling, mega-band X Japan have faced in their 30 year career. This documentary will leave you equally breathless and uplifted. It is the best music doc of the year, and we are honored to bring it to American audiences.”

X Japan pioneered the “Visual-Kei” movement and sold millions of albums and singles in the late ’80s through the mid-’90s. They broke up in 1997 and reunited a decade later.

We Are X chronicles the band’s history over the past three decades, culminating with their preparation for a reunion concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden. X Japan’s first new studio album since 1996’s Dahlia is expected to be released later this year.
