Watch Trivium’s Matt Heafy Cover Alice in Chains’ ‘Down in a Hole’ + Sublime’s ‘Santeria’

If you haven’t subscribed to the YouTube channel of Trivium‘s Matt Heafy yet, you really should. Much like Evanescence’s Amy Lee last year, Heafy has been using his YouTube channel of late to post a number of cover songs for fans to enjoy. His latest additions include covers of Alice in Chains‘ “Down in a Hole” (seen above) and Sublime‘s “Santeria” (seen below).

As we’ve seen over the years, the Trivium singer has evolved vocally, adding in more clean vocals on the band’s music over the years. And with these covers he’s been posting of late, you get a better idea of Heafy’s true range and singing voice.

Armed with his acoustic guitar, Heafy has been setting up shop in a rehearsal space that’s decked out with some of his memorabilia from past tours and a stack of guitars. On the Alice in Chains cover, while he doesn’t have that swampy vocal of the original, he does stay in the darkened and moody spirit of the song, with his vocal power really cutting through at points. Meanwhile, the cover of Sublime’s “Santeria” finds the singer in a lighter mood, utilizing the higher register of his vocal range.

On top of the recent additions, Heafy has covered everything from Opeth’s “Harvest” to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” to Radiohead’s “Exit Music (From a Film),” all while showing off an array of metal t-shirts in the process.
