Watain Unleash Incendiary New Song ‘Nuclear Alchemy’ Off 2018 Album ‘Trident Wolf Eclipse’
Sweden’s Satanic wolf pack Watain have served as black metal’s 21st century ambassadors, keeping the spirit of old alive through shockingly grotesque performances and blackhearted songcraft. Five years removed from The Wild Hunt, they’re set to release their sixth studio album, Trident Wolf Eclipse, on Jan. 5 through Century Media and have dished out a Hell-ordained video for the opening track, “Nuclear Alchemy.”
Diehards who proclaimed Watain’s earlier records like Casus Luciferi and Sworn to the Dark as genre-saving releases were largely turned off by the band’s previous album and its more exploratory sound (not us though). “Nuclear Alchemy” reignites those same fires that burned over a decade ago with its buzzsaw riffing and unforgiving tempo as the earth fractures, offering a portal from the underworld to Earth with an explosive cannon blast in the track’s opening moments. Erik Danielsson’s venomous rasp also returns to its classic form, straying from his more intelligible approach in recent years.
“After 20 years of carving our own path through and out of the world, Trident Wolf Eclipse feels like a worthy point of arrival indeed. One of power and force, shining a new harsh light upon all that has been, those that perished along the way, the life altering struggle and triumphant ecstasy of Watain,” said the collective. “Trident Wolf Eclipse is however not about the past, nor the future, it is about here and now, and we sincerely look forward to show you all what that implies. To all those that are as impatient as we are for that day to come; Thank you for your unending support and see you soon.”
