The music world has lost one of the greats as Velvet Underground singer/guitarist and solo artist Lou Reed has passed away at the age of 71.

Reed reportedly died Sunday morning (Oct. 27) but the official cause of death has not been revealed. However, according to Rolling Stone, the singer had undergone a liver transplant back in May.

As a member of the Velvet Underground, Reed pioneered a groundbreaking sound yielding such influential albums as ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico,’ ‘White Light/White Heat’ and ‘Loaded.’ Songs like ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties,’ ‘Heroin,’ ‘Sweet Jane’ and ‘Sunday Morning’ helped lead them to induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

As a solo artist, Lou Reed delivered such classics as ‘Walk on the Wild Side,’ ‘Satellite of Love’ and ‘Perfect Day.’ In recent years, Reed enjoyed a resurgence, appearing with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert in New York, then extending that collaboration to include a full album with Metallica known as ‘Lulu.’ Reed also appeared on the Gorillaz song ‘Some Kind of Nature’ from their ‘Plastic Beach’ album and turned up at shows during the band’s touring in support of the disc.

Reed is survived by his wife, experimental artist Laurie Anderson. Noisecreep sends out our condolences to Reed’s friends and family.
