Trivium’s Matt Heafy Shares Acoustic Cover of Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’

It’s been an exciting year so far for Matt Heafy and Trivium. The band is slated to drop their eighth studio album, The Sin and the Sentence, soon and the frontman has been churning out a slew of acoustic cover songs spanning a wide range of artists. His latest comes on a more somber note as he takes on “I Won’t Back Down” in honor of Tom Petty, who passed away last week on Oct. 2.

Heafy’s rendition is a full 30 seconds shorter than the original, foregoing the guitar solo and keeping the focus on the lyrical aspect of the classic hit. While Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers maintained a calm but cool upbeat vibe to the track, the Trivium mainman positions the song in a softer light, which works especially well given the sad circumstances. Heafy even manages to touch on the nasal-toned vocal character of Petty’s voice a bit here as he’s grown into a multi-faceted clean singer.

Petty died at the age of 66 and was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest in his Malibu, Calif. home. Reports surfaced that the rock legend was then put on life support, but had no brain activity and the decision to take him off life support was subsequently made.

Trivium will hit the road on a co-headlining tour with Swedish melodic death metal icons Arch Enemy starting on Oct. 27. While She Sleeps and Fit for an Autopsy will round out the bill on the run that will blanket the U.S., closing out on Dec. 6. Trivium will be supporting The Sin and the Sentence, out Oct. 20, while Arch Enemy will be touring behind their new disc, Will to Power, which has already been released.
