The Autumn Offering, ‘Synapse’ — Killer Song Lyrics

The Autumn Offering is a band with a lot of history behind it. Not only does the Daytona Beach, Fla. death metal band have a recent fifth offering in their discography -- the eponymous 'The Autumn Offering' -- but much some of the lyrical content is derived from vocalist Matt McChesney's family history with illicit drug use. This is the case with 'Synapse,' the opening track from the album.

McChesney had first tried opiates at the tender age of 15, a dabbling that eventually led to some prison time later in life. "After the initial sickness subsided," McChesney said in an interview with Antimusic, "I felt as if all my problems drifted away like the clouds above me. We all know that later on you learn that is not the case and you stop getting high. You need the drug just to function, to live. Your future is now a string of methadone clinics and recovery groups. It is not worth it. If you are lucky enough as I was, to escape this drug, you will bear the physical and mental scars of it forever. Some, such as my father, were not so lucky."

Though McChesney was a victim of drug abuse, he refuses to blame the destructive lifestyle on external influences. "You realize later, you have a choice, you've always had one, and no one is to blame but yourself. Heed the words of this song carefully, all you would-be thrill seekers. You may get more then you bargained for!"

The Autumn Offering will be touring the US with Kittie and Silent Civilian to support 'The Autumn Offering' starting in September.
