Deftones bassist Chi Cheng passed away in April of this year, despite spending several years languishing in a vegetative state after a 2008 vehicular accident. The band continued to perform with Sergio Vega taking up the bass in Cheng's stead, but one thing is for sure. Chi Cheng will always be with the Deftones, even if not on this earthly plane. The band dedicated its Reading Festival performance to Cheng this weekend (Friday, Aug. 23).
For years, Deftones singer Chino Moreno maintained that 'Eros,' the final album the band recorded with late bassist Chi Cheng before he was injured in a car accident that left him in a semi-conscious state, would remain shelved. The singer, currently promoting his new Palms project with members of Isis, has changed his tune in the wake of Cheng's death in April 2013, intimating that the record could and should come down off the shelf where it's languished since 2008. All in due time, however.
