System of a Down’s Serj Tankian Delivers Moving Performance at ‘Game of Thrones’ Live Experience

The Game of Thrones Concert Experience kicked off in late February, bringing a fully immersive spectacle to fans of the wildly popular television series. Those in attendance at last night’s (March 23) show at The Forum in Los Angeles got an even more unique experience, getting to soak up the program’s hit song with the aid of System of a Down‘s Serj Tankian.

“The Rains of Castamere” is famous in the world of Westeros, the fictional land where Game of Thrones is set. Guided by a piano and a symphony, Tankian showcases his broad range, starting off somber and unnerving. Moving along with the crescendoing energy, he explodes during the final moments in a moving performance that now stands among his finest achievements.

The Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience took three years to fully realize with over 800 linear feet of video screens, seven stages to help recreate the world of Westeros, 136 speakers placed throughout the arena that White Walker battle calls and dragon screams and seven battle scenes. The setting is so expansive, it takes 15 semi-trucks to transports everything from show to show.

Tankian had teased the appearance earlier in the week, sending out a tweet (seen below) that read, “My friend Ramin Djawadi, composer of Game Of Thrones, and I playing cars? OR Prepping for the Game of Thrones Live show at the The Forum.”

System of a Down’s last record, Mesmerize, was released in 2005 and it appears the drought between albums is about to end. In early November, John Dolmayan confirmed the rumors that System were in the studio working on new material. “Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things. We’re not trying to make Toxicity Part II just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels,” he told Kerrang.
