System of a Down’s Serj Tankian: ‘There Has Been Talk’ of a New Album
There has been plenty of speculation of when System of a Down will record again, especially given the band’s touring reunions in recent years. But so far there’s not been a new album. However, there are some signs that that may be about to change, as Serj Tankian addressed the topic in a new interview.
Tankian tells Rolling Stone, “There has been talk [of a new album], and we are going to play this tour, come back and we’re going to see where we are. If we have songs that work for System, if I have them and Daron [Malakian] has them. The openness is there to work together, but we haven’t made any particular plans that we can announce.”
That’s a change in tune from recent years where some of Tankian’s bandmates were eager to record again, while the vocalist had a number of projects he wanted to complete first.
Tankian goes on to add, “I have a few [songs] that could apply, but I’m not sure until the time comes where I can actually play them for the guys and see if it’s something that vibes off them.”
Tankian does have another project on the books, revealing that he’s scoring a film that’s based on the Armenian genocide called ‘1915.’ “It’s a very interesting drama that’s actually shot in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theater, a very old and distinguished theater,” says Tankian. “It’s a really, really interesting psychological thriller, modern story. It deals with denial and the psychological impacts of a genocide rather than the physical aspects of it.”
The singer and his System of a Down cohorts remain committed to their mission of having the Armenian genocide recognized and will set out on the ‘Wake Up the Souls’ tour this spring. Dates can be found here.
As for that possible album, Tankian concluded, “[The fans] will be the first to know. Fans will know before the press knows, I assure you.”
