Steel Panther’s Michael Starr on Being Inspired by Tiger Woods and Groupies

F. Scott Schaffer

Next month, Sunset Strip hair metal troublemakers Steel Panther will be unleashing ‘Balls Out,’ their sophomore album. Produced by Jay Ruston (Anthrax, The Donnas), the record also features cameo appearances from Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Chad Kroeger (Nickelback) and comedian Dane Cook.

“I think we’ve grown a lot as a band from our last album to this one,” Steel Panther frontman Michael Starr tells Noisecreep. “We’ve had so many new experiences to pull from. We’ve been playing our weekly Hollywood show for 11-years now, but to go out on tour throughout the world is a different level. Just the crazy backstage stuff alone was great for the lyrics on ‘Balls Out.’ So in terms of the music, the word “mature” comes up, but I also like to think the word “immature” fits the record too,” laughs Starr.

One of the tracks on the upcoming album, ‘Just Like Tiger Woods,’ is a tribute to the golf star and recent tabloid magnet. “We normally don’t write songs about current events, but when this Tiger Woods thing exploded on the news, we knew we couldn’t pass it up. Now we think he’s the coolest f—ing guy ever. Think about it. He’s an undercover rocker and nobody knows it. He’s nailed so many hot chicks. It was a no-brainer for Steel Panther to dedicate a song to him on the new album. Tiger rules!”

Like ‘Feel the Steel,’ Steel Panther’s debut album, ‘Balls Out’ also features the L.A. heroes also delivering lighters-in-the-air worthy power ballads. “Let’s be honest, the power ballad is one of the most important assets for a heavy metal band. Girls like puppies, furry stuff, things like that. So you need a song that’s on the softer side to get the chicks’ attention. We have a song on ‘Balls Out’ called ‘Weenie Ride’ that is going to get your chick totally wet.

“Actually, do you what place is great for finding chicks to bang? We just came back from Disneyland and it was amazing. I guess when you’re in the “happiest place on Earth,” p—y is ready to go. I know it sounds creepy, but it’s totally true!”

Noisecreep then asked Starr about the inspiration behind ‘Gold Digging Whore,’ one of the other tracks on the album. “Now that we’re touring all over the world, a lot of girls think that we’re loaded now. It’s all switched on us. It used to be that we’d get the strippers to pay for us, but now they want us to hook everything up. But we’re like, “F— that!”

“I know high profile athletes get that too. What I will say is that those kinds of gold-digger groupies are at least fun to have sex with, since they think they have to work hard because they think you have a lot of money [laughs].”
