Sick Puppies Rock Los Angeles for Walmart Soundcheck Risers Feature

July is a big month for Sick Puppies, who not only will release their latest album ‘Connect’ (on July 16), but will also get a little extra push from Walmart as they filmed a show for fans as part of the Walmart Soundcheck Risers web-based special debuting July 15. The show, also backed by T-Mobile, had fans promoting the performance on social networking for entry into the gig as well as the chance to walk away with one of five guitars.

As for the performance itself, the Sick Puppies booked the intimate El Rey Theater, playing below the chandeliers against a well-lit backdrop for a show that was powerful in parts, moving in others and left audiences rocked with an uplifting night of music.

Frontman Shim Moore played to the audience throughout the night, leading them in “yeahs” for ‘Riptide,’ “whoa-oh-whoa-oh-whoa-oh’s” for the current single ‘There’s No Going Back’ and generally keeping the energy level high throughout. Of course, aggressive rockers like ‘War’ and the show closing ‘You’re Going Down’ didn’t hurt either.

The band also got a chance to break it down a little further as drummer Mark Goodwin came out from behind his kit to keep the beat on a box, providing a three-wide intimate jam featuring ‘All the Same’ and the likely future hit ‘Connect.’

The performance had the feel of a band that was on the verge of really breaking huge after building their following on recent releases. The group took the time to address the vital role the fans played in their rise in recent years. Moore thanked the crowd for helping them get past the days of surviving on Ramen noodles, ranch dressing and Costco products to accruing the success they’ve had so far.

The Walmart Soundcheck Risers performance will debut exclusively online July 15 at this location, so be sure to check back. Sick Puppies’ ‘Connect’ album drops in stores the following day, July 16. Pre-orders are underway at iTunes. Take a look at our photo gallery from the show below.
