Serj Tankian continues his fascination with the film world, working on a pair of new movie scores that are coming out back-to-back. The first is for the documentary, Intent to Destroy, Joe Berlinger’s latest film that takes a closer look at genocide denialism. The second is a Russian historical film called Furious: The Legend of Kolovrat.

Tankian was initially one of the interview subjects for Intent to Destroy, but eventually came on board to provide the musical score for the film. The documentary was released in early November and the score was recently released digitally through iTunes and Apple Music, with it being widely available through all platforms starting this Friday (Nov. 24).

The singer says of the film, “Hands down one of the most powerful films I’ve ever seen let alone been a part of. It was a unique experience for me to be in the film and compose the music for it as well. To musically match the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide with the nefarious modern Turkish denial of the truth, I employed a hybrid of classical, ethnic and modern electronic instruments melting in the Duduk and Oud with processed ambient and arpeggiated instruments to match the story.”

As for Furious, the film is set in the 13th Century and centers on the Ryazan knight Evpaty Kolovrat, who was the leader of a 17-man squad that defended against thousands of Mongol warrior hordes. The Furious: The Legend of Kolovrat soundtrack arrives digitally through Lakeshore Records on Dec. 8.

“I’m a huge fan of historical action films, so I welcomed the opportunity to create my first epic score for Furious,” says Tankian in a statement. “We used a full orchestra with epic percussion, a huge choir, ethnic instruments and a wall of electric guitars. It’s truly a kick-ass score.” The song and video for “A Fine Moment to Die,” which is a duet between Tankian and Katya Ivanchikova, has started to get some early attention. Watch the clip below.

We recently had a chance to chat with Tankian about both films. Stay tuned for our interview coming soon to Loudwire.
