"I think tonight we're going to change the new of the stadium from C-R-E-W to C-R-U-E stadium" said Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee backstage, just before the band's headline set at Rock on the Range 2009. Columbus, Ohio hosted the two-day, 38 band festival of all things rock and Metal.

Day one brought performances by Saliva, Chevelle, Korn, Duff McKagan's Loaded, Flyleaf, Atreyu, Static- X, Black Stone Cherry, Slipknot and more. Unseasonably cold temps made the festival little less comfortable for those outside the pit – for the ones brave enough to face the barrier, the weather was just fine.

McKagan and his Loaded boys rocked the side stage and seemed to be enjoying the festival mix. The band played songs off the new album 'Sick' and also did the Guns n' Roses classic "It's So Easy" before calling it a day and heading to the merch tent to meet fans.

Alice in Chains proved that new singers sometimes do give old bands new life. William DuVall sings differently than Layne Staley, but in 2009, Alice in Chains is a new band with a new sound so it fits. The band performed "Again" and "Would?" plus "Rooster" featuring Duff McKagan on guitar.

A few sound issues aside, Slipknot's headline set was strong and high energy, largely relying on fan-loved older material and more radio friendly hits off the band's newest release 'All Hope is Gone.' Corey Taylor went from seamlessly singing "Dead Memories" right to some of the band's heaviest material, including "People=Shit."

Sunday started early, with fans running for the barrier to claim a front row spot for Avenged Sevenfold and Mötley Crüe several hours later. Before those bands had their turn at the fun, acts like Shinedown, Blue October, Buckcherry, Clutch and Charm City Devils got the crowd whipped into a frenzy.

Avenged Sevenfold got pumped before taking the stage. As the crowd waited, members of A7X listened to Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me." Sufficiently ready for bruising, Avenged played a set of straight metal, mixing songs from 'Waking the Fallen,' 'City of Evil' and their self-titled disc. When it came time for "Unholy Confessions" the crowd was at its most aggressive of the weekend. The boys in Avenged Sevenfold seemed to feed off this energy – using their pyro to highlight drum kicks and heavy bass riffs.

"When you leave the place, it's going to smell like ass and puke," prophesized Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars. "People are going to be drinking a lot of beer and when we get done kicking their asses, the shit will be flying everywhere." Opening with "Kickstart My Heart" and running through classics like "Shout at the Devil" and "Wildside" plus newer tunes like "Mutherf*cker of the Year" and "Saints of Los Angeles," Mötley prove they can still hang with the kids.

More than 50,000 attended Rock on the Range 2009.
