Ray Manzarek of the legendary rock band The Doors has died at the age of 74. The keyboardist passed away today (May 20) in Germany following a battle with bile duct cancer.

Doors guitarist Robby Krieger released the following statement: “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today. I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

After forming in 1965, the Doors went on to become one of the world’s most popular bands until the tragic death of singer Jim Morrison in 1971. Manzarek and Krieger brought back the band’s music throughout the years, playing their classic hits on tour with various lead singers, including Ian Astbury of the Cult.

Manzarek’s wife Dorothy and brothers Rick and James were by his bedside when he passed. He is also survived by his son Pablo.
