Raunchy

Danish metallers Raunchy are gearing up for the Oct. 12 street date of their new album 'A Discord Electric,' which will see release via Lifeforce. The band's modern take on metal will satisfy young and hopeless urban dwellers as well as kids trapped in small towns in the middle of nowhere. It's that universal.

Vocalist Kasper Thomsen said the new album is by far the most experimental effort of their career. Guitarist Lars Christensen elaborated, telling Noisecreep, "We said to ourselves from the beginning of 'A Discord Electric' that we didn't want to limit ourselves. If anybody had alternative ideas for incorporating new sounds or trying things out that was a bit 'unnormal' for the Raunchy songwriting process, we should do it. We don't want to sound like a band that has done the same record five times. Since four members in the band have a Pro Tools set up these days, we've all been sitting in each of our home studios to develop additional layering after we got the basic song structure down at Jacob Hansen's studio."

Christensen also admitted the band took things to extremes, too, trying their hand at a poppy song, albeit only poppy by metal standards. "We've never been this poppy but at the same time, we're playing fast, grinding and sometimes, we're playing some really down-tuned and heavy stuff. On the track 'Big Truth,' we invited Mattais and Ole from Danish synth pop/rockers Dune to sing along. This song is by far the most poppy song in the history of Raunchy. We knew that from the beginning but we just said, 'Hey it's a fine little song. Why not make it as melodic as possible?'"

The recording process wasn't anything stressful, either. "Well, since we're old men, nothing remarkable happens when we're in the studio," Christensen said. "It's not like the 'Confusion Bay' or 'Death Pop Romance' days where all kinds of weird spontaneous things could happen. Nowadays, we are 100 percent focused when we enter the studio and we normally work until late in the evening to sharpen everything."

Even with an ironclad work ethic, the members of Raunchy know how to loosen up -- and it involves beer and bacon. "When you work hard, you also need to relax and have fun, so I would say that alcohol is a good friend. Late at night we're normally ... laughing and telling lies ... and I think we watched 'Iron Maiden -- Flight 666' and 'Metallica -- Paris Pur Une Nuit' around 15 times during our stay. One thing that has changed over the years is that everybody in the band has got a pair of running shoes, so 'vanity' is the keyword here -- especially when most of the food you consume is junk food and bacon."
