Rare Misfits Recording Unearthed 15 Years Later
A previously unreleased demo track, recorded 15 years ago at the Misfits‘ New Jersey rehearsal space, has made its way online. The rare track, which was recorded this week back in 1995, can be heard at Misfits book author and veteran punk kitman Joel Gausten’s MySpace, where he’s previously posted demo versions of ‘She,’ ‘Astro Zombies’ and ‘I Turned Into a Martian.’
Accompanying the track is a lengthy blog post entitled ‘15 Years Ago Today,’ which provides a detailed account of the recording of the track, which does not feature Glenn Danzig.
The demo, for the song ‘Who Killed Marilyn?’ features bassist Jerry Only, guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, Eric Weiss on vocals and Gausten, who was 17-year-old at the time, on drums. This version of the band recorded 11 songs with engineer and future Misfits drummer Dr. Chud. According to Gausten, the songs were tracked months before Michale Graves becoming the band’s full-time singer.
Gausten served as the band’s fill-in drummer during this time, and recounted the experience in his book ‘Tales of Horror: The History of the Misfits & the Undead,’ which will be re-released this summer with a new cover and additional interviews.
“Earlier this week, I realized that it would soon be 15 years since this recording session took place, and I wanted to do something special to celebrate that date,” explains Gausten. “‘Who Killed Marilyn?’ remains a favorite Misfits song of mine, and it was a blast to dig out this recording, go down memory lane and hear a 17-year-old me make noise with Jerry and Doyle!”
