Philip Anselmo on Metallica’s ‘Load’ Album: ‘It’s a Terrible Record’

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire (2)

Pantera / Down vocalist Philip Anselmo has always been outspoken, and for a new article authored by the man himself, Anselmo chose Metallica‘s ‘Load’ as an album that should have never seen the light of day.

In the latest issue of Metal Hammer, Anselmo offered up some info on albums which have affected his life. In Metal Hammer’s ‘Discs of Doom’ article, Anselmo was asked to name an album that, in his opinion, should have never been release.

Anselmo’s answer was Metallica’s ‘Load,’ an album that has both been praised and heavily criticized by Metallica fans. “I would have to say [1996’s] ‘Load’ by Metallica,” Anselmo says. “I mean, it’s a terrible record, man. I just don’t get it. If you’re gonna put out a record like that, just do a f—ing side project or something, ya know?”

Meanwhile, Metallica are at work on a new album, which will be their first since 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic.’ “I can tell you, all kidding aside, I’m pretty convinced that 90 percent of the record is actually written, it’s just gotta be kind of assembled between all those riffs,” drummer Lars Ulrich tells Metal Zone. “It’s just a matter of connecting this to this and sort of shaping it into a song. And so, I’m pretty psyched about that.”

One new Metallica song, ‘Lords of Summer,’ has already been released as a “first pass version” and is available for purchase on iTunes.
