Nothingface Singer Matt Holt Dead at 39

We have sad news to report as Matt Holt, singer for the alternative metal group Nothingface, died at the age of 39 at his home in Maryland on April 15 after battling a degenerative illness over the last several years. No other details about the frontman’s death have been made available as of yet.

Holt joined the Washington D.C. outfit in 1995, replacing original singer David Gabbard. He was featured on all five Nothingface albums, including their eponymous, self-released 1995 debut. The frontman was known for his dynamic vocal range, capable of unearthing feral growls as well as crisp, soaring and soothing cleans, a quality that helped establish the signature sound of the band.

Nothingface disbanded in 2004, citing problems with their label, TVT Records, which stemmed from a lack of financial support while the band was on the 2003 edition of Ozzfest. The band dropped off the festival tour, refusing to play another show while still under the label. Since the group was still under contract, they opted to split up and Holt continued to pursue his musical career under the band Kingdom of Snakes.

The band reunited again in 2005 with intent to work on a new record. Three years went by with little progress on the album, leading to guitarist Tom Maxwell‘s (Hellyeah) departure and the dissolution of Nothingface once more. Maxwell, who had been critical of Holt as recently as October, had stated that the singer’s lack of work ethic was the driving force behind the second breakup.

Loudwire extends our condolences to the Holt family and all who knew and worked with Matt.
