Night Ranger Cover AC/DC’s ‘Dirty Deeds’ — Video Premiere
Night Ranger’s brand new album ‘Somewhere in California’ will hit stores this week. The effort celebrates the 30th anniversary of the California arena rockers. ‘Somewhere in California’ finds Night Ranger returning to their classic sound with a fresh and modern production touch.
As a bonus for anyone who buys ‘Somewhere in California’ on iTunes, Night Ranger have recorded a cover of ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,’ the infamous blues rave-up from AC/DC. Noisecreep is proud to present the exclusive premiere of the song’s video. “We’ve always thrown in cover songs into our set to mix things up a bit,” said guitarist Brad Gillis, on the line with Noisecreep from a German stop on Night Ranger’s current European tour. “Through the years we’ve included songs like ‘Crazy Train’ from Ozzy Osbourne and AC/DC’s ‘Highway to Hell’ and had a lot of fun doing that. So when it came to record ‘Somewhere in California,’ we decided we wanted to include a cover on there. We chose ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ since it hasn’t been covered as much as some of their other tunes.”

Many other artists have tried to emulate AC/DC’s Angus Young’s immortal guitar tone and have largely fallen short. Noisecreep asked Gillis if he had any reservations about taking on such a feat. “We didn’t mess with the formula and instead kept things pretty straight-forward on the guitar end,” the guitarist said. “The only thing I changed up was during my solo where I added some whammy bar flair to it.”
Night Ranger bassist-vocalist Jack Bladesalso had his work cut out for him singing the late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott’s parts on ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.’ Not only did Bladesalso rise to the occasion, but he also got the approval of ex-bandmate and classic rock legend Ted Nugent.
“Jack really nailed the performance on the track. We were blown away by his energy in that vocal booth,” says Gillis. “When we were recording the AC/DC song, Ted Nugent was actually in the studio with us. Jack and Ted both played in Damn Yankees together and Night Ranger covers a song of theirs called ‘Coming of Age’ on this new album. So anyway, Jack asks Ted if he wanted to lay down some guitar on the AC/DC cover and he went in there and knocked it out in one take. We were floored by that! It was fun adding a little bit of the Night Ranger flavor to a classic.”
