Neurosis' Scott Kelly to Perform With Mastodon on European Tour Dates

This is a serious treat for Mastodon fans. Neurosis frontman and frequent collaborator Scott Kelly will join Mastodon on the road for the entire November leg of their European tour. This opens up the possibility of an extremely unique setlist for Mastodon’s late fall gigs.

With Neurosis acting as one of Mastodon’s biggest influences, the modern metal giants have invited Scott Kelly into the studio for every full-length album since 2004’s Leviathan. Kelly has committed backing vocals and even lyrics to one song per album for 13 years, making him the unofficial fifth Mastodon member and an integral part of the recording process.

Kelly committed vocals to Mastodon’s most-played song of all time according to Setlist.fm, “Crystal Skull.” The third-most performed track in Mastodon history? “Aqua Dementia,” which also boasts a Scott Kelly vocal. Kelly’s inclusion in Mastodon’s upcoming tour may bring out a track that hasn’t been dusted off in a few years. “Crack the Skye” hasn’t been unleashed since 2014, so Kelly’s presence may bring it back into the fold.

Most exciting of all, Kelly’s stage time could even bring songs Mastodon has never performed live before. Once More ‘Round the Sun’s “Diamond in the Witch House” and Emperor of Sand’s “Scorpion Breath,” both of which feature a Scott Kelly appearance, have never graced a Mastodon setlist. Could this be the stage for the songs’ live debuts?
