Metallica’s Lars Ulrich: ‘I Don’t Think the World Needs Any Walls’

Metallica are in the midst of their “WorldWired” 2017 tour and during a press stop with Mexico’s Las Estrellas network, drummer Lars Ulrich was asked about one of the big issues facing Mexico — Donald Trump’s proposed border wall.

One of the key components of Trump’s presidential campaign was a stiffer enforcement on immigration, including the building of a border wall hoping to deter the amount of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. When asked about the Trump “wall,” Ulrich stated, “I don’t think the world needs any walls. I think we need to bring people together.”

The drummer continued, “Metallica travels all over the world, and through music we try to bring people together. So whether we’re in Mexico or whether we’re in Asia or whether we’re in Europe or whatever, we encourage as many different people from as many different backgrounds to come together and share music and life and culture and all these experiences.”

In the interview, Ulrich pointed out that he was born in Denmark, explaining, “Being one Danish guy, being asked an opinion, I don’t think any walls are necessary, and I think that, increasingly, as far as Metallica traveling all over this beautiful planet, we break down barriers with music.”

Metallica have made a point to keep the politics out of their music, though James Hetfield stated that each of the members have their own opinions that they can express. Guitarist Kirk Hammett has been particularly critical of President Trump, speaking out against his environmental position as well as what he called the “lies, fear-mongering and misguided anger” that has started as a result of Trump’s election.
