Metallica’s James Hetfield: It’s Really Important for Me to See Motorhead in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Preach, James Hetfield! Metallica’s frontman is speaking out in support of the dearly departed Lemmy Kilmister and the legendary Motorhead for a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Metallica were inducted into the Hall in 2009. During Hetfield’s acceptance speech, he implored the Rock Hall to consider Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Rush, KISS, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and, of course, Motorhead for induction. Since Hetfield’s plea, Rush, Alice Cooper, KISS and Deep Purple have been ushered through the Hall of Fame threshold, yet Motorhead still remain excluded.

During a recent interview with 95.5 KLOS, Hetfield addressed the Motorhead issue once again. “With the passing of Lemmy, it’s really, really important for me to see Motörhead acknowledged in that,” Hetfield told host Gary Moore. ”’Cause there’s no more rock and roll person on this planet than Lemmy and Motörhead.”

Metallica even dedicated one of their new tracks, “Murder One,” to Lemmy Kilmister, named after Lem’s famous amp. “I loved being murdered every night by that thing, man. He was just such an icon, such an inspiration to us as a band. There’s certainly no way we’d be around if there was no Motörhead,” Hetfield explained. “And you know, to see your idol, your immortal one actually be mortal, it hit us pretty hard. So I felt lyrically it makes sense to acknowledge him and how much he’s meant in our lives.”

Motorhead was not nominated for a 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but we can remain hopeful for the future. Metallica’s new double album, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, will see a Nov. 18 release.
