Metallica’s Robert Trujillo + Kirk Hammett Salute Michael Schenker During Solo in Hamburg, Germany

Metallica recently offered a musical nod to one of their metal brethren — iconic German musician Michael Schenker. The band were playing the Barlaycard Arena in Hamburg last Thursday night (March 29) when Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett started riffing bits of Michael Schenker Group’s “Into the Arena” and UFO’s “Rock Bottom” as a sign of respect to Schenker.

For those not aware, Metallica have been including space for a solo out of the song “Halo on Fire” where Trujillo and Hammett get to take center stage. The solo typically includes a bit of “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth,” but the other bits in the solo may change depending on the night or location. Often, if there’s a hook to the city where they are playing, the guys will work it in. At another German stop earlier on this leg of the tour, they performed a bit of Scorpions’ “Rock You Like a Hurricane.”

Last fall, the pair performed Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” while on tour in Birmingham and took on Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger” for the people of Manchester in the wake of the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert.

Metallica’s Hardwired … To Self-Destruct album continues to fare well over a year beyond its release, recently climbing back to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The band has a handful of dates remaining on their European run, breaking briefly to return home for the annual Metallica Day with the San Francisco Giants baseball team. After getting a summer breather, the group will resume their “WorldWired” tour stateside in September. See all of their scheduled shows here.
