Metallica’s Robert Trujillo + Kirk Hammett Honor Peter Schilling During Solo in Stuttgart, Germany

Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett two took time out of their nightly “doodle” in Stuttgart, Germany on to honor local legend Peter Schilling. The two covered his 1983 hit “Major Tom (Coming Home),” which is Schilling’s retelling of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

In the video, above, Trujillo gets a loud reaction from the faithful when he steps to the mic and begins singing the song in German. The crowd joins in singing along with the chorus in the short and powerful clip.

Metallica have been making nods to local legends during their last few tours. Following the band’s performance of “Halo on Fire,” Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield leave the stage and Trujillo and Hammett have been performing songs as a duo. They usually play a cover or two before Trujillo launches into the classic bass solo “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth.”

Trujillo and Hammett performed Michael Schenker Group’s “Into the Arena” and UFO’s “Rock Bottom” at their March 29 concert in Hamburg, Germany. They also performed Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” last fall in Birmingham, England and covered Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” at Manchester, England gig, which occurred in the wake of the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert.

Metallica wrap their European tour in Helsinki, Finland on May 11. They kick off their U.S. tour in Madison, Wis. on September 2. Check all their tour dates here.
