Metallica’s Lars Ulrich Has Been Knighted in Denmark

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has been knighted in his native Denmark. The musician was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Dannebrog by Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark.

To be rewarded with the Knight’s Cross “is a means of honoring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life or for those working for Danish interests.”

According to, Lars followed in the footsteps of previous honorees adventurer and sailor Troels Kløvedal, film director Thomas Vinterberg, singer Anne Linnet and actors Sofie Gråbøl and Ghita Nørby.

Metallica shared a photo of Lars with Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, with the following caption:

Does this really mean we must address him as Sir Lars now? 😂 Congrats to Lars as he was knighted last night by Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark. Not bad for a snot-nosed kid from Gentofte!

Though Lars’ Wikipedia page now refers to him as Sir Lars Ulrich, “Sir” seems to be more of a British thing, so it looks like you won’t have to refer to Ulrich as “Sir Lars.” Metallica’s massive North American tour will run until mid-August, so click here to check out the band’s remaining dates.
