Megadeth, Testament, Overkill Members Lead Nick Menza Tribute Video on One Year Anniversary of His Death

It was one year ago today (May 21, 2016) that the metal world lost a drumming great with the death of Nick Menza. The former Megadeth drummer has been performing with his band OHM at the Baked Potato in Studio City, Calif., when he collapsed three songs into their set and died. It was later determined that he died from congestive heart failure. His death sent shockwaves through the metal community, and to mark the one year anniversary of his passing, his family has just released a new tribute video.

The clip posted above features not only music and photos from throughout Menza’s life, but also a series of tributes from the likes of Megadeth’s David Ellefson, Testament‘s Alex Skolnick, Overkill and Shadows Fall‘s Jason Bittner, Death Angel‘s Rob Cavestany, Byzantine’s Chris “OJ” Ojeda, Doyle‘s Anthony Tiny Biuso and more.

In the video, Ellefson shares a memory of Menza being his “foodie buddy” in the band and adds, “I dearly miss Nick. He was such a good friend.” Skolnick also reflects on his memories, concluding, “I’m glad I got to be around him for the short time I did.”

Bittner recalls being a fan long before they ever met. “Once I got Rust in Peace, I thought, ‘Oh my god, this is what they needed.’ The drumming on that album was amazing,” says Bittner, who cites Menza as “a breath of fresh air” for Megadeth.

The family concludes, “Thank you for sharing stories and for keeping his legacy alive. Nick will forever be in our hearts. Don, Rose and Donia Menza.”
