Maynard James Keenan Done With Lyrics for ‘All But One’ New Tool Song

The possibility of a new Tool album has dominated 2018. To be fair, reports of new music from Tool hasn’t been sparse over the last few years, but now it really feels like this is going to be the year we finally get that long-awaited successor to 10,000 Days. Adam Jones has said the music is “done” and Maynard James Keenan just revealed the writing process has almost been completed as he has just one more song to finish lyrics for.

Typically when tweeting, Keenan is dismissive about Tool’s new music ever being finished, most commonly in response to fans. A recent pair of tweets, however, appeared to be genuine, though still cut with a bit of the expected sarcasm. In the first tweet (both seen below), the frontman explained that he began receiving the final version of tracks from the rest of the band a few months ago.

“That, in theory, means the tracks won’t change out from under me while I’m trying to write stories and melodies to them. In theory,” commented the singer. Last year, he told Joe Rogan that there’s been instances where he received the final version of songs, finished lyrics, and then the song changed and he had to scrap everything, so that’s where the “in theory” bit comes from.

Though he’s still waiting for the final version of one more song, Keenan has made remarkable progress. “Words and melodies 100% done on all but 1,” he added in a second tweet. Tool will still need to track everything in the studio and are a “long way from the finish line,” but Danny Carey‘s commitment to a 2018 release appears have more sincerity than other release targets of the past. Just don’t expect it to come out this summer.

In the meantime, as Keenan mentioned, A Perfect Circle‘s new album, Eat the Elephant, will be out on April 20.
