Max Cavalera Prepares Killer Riffs for ESPN 2014 World Cup Themes

Max Cavalera is a man of many bands — Soulfly, Killer Be Killed, Cavalera Conspiracy — but he’s also keeping busy these days with another interesting project. Cavalera was commissioned to create some music for ESPN’s coverage of the World Cup.

Cavalera knows exactly what a huge deal it is to be asked to create music for a global event such as The World Cup. He tells Dead Rhetoric, “I was so nervous to do this because it was a big request from ESPN. The guy is a fan in ESPN. He’s a big wig. He called me, and when Gloria [Cavalera’s wife and manager] told me the news, she was like, ‘You’re going to like this one! This is one that’s going to be close to your heart. ESPN wants you to write ten two-minute songs with riffs so they can use it for the World Cup.'”

Cavalera admits it was a tall order, and he had some nerves about trying to complete the task. He recalls, “I jammed with my son Zyon and we prepared some of the material and they loved it. They’re going to use a lot of it, even for stuff outside of the World Cup. I can’t wait to hear that s—. It was definitely weird, off-the-wall stuff I don’t do all the time.”

The singer-guitarist adds that he’s a fan of doing out of the ordinary projects, adding, “[It] was really cool. I was really happy … I was like, ‘It’s the World Cup, it’s Brazil.’ I took it seriously and I did my best. In fact, some of the riffs could be used for killer Soulfly songs. I was like, ‘Ugh! I should have saved those.”

The 2014 FIFA World Cup begins June 12 and will run through the championship match on July 13. Listen for Cavalera’s contributions throughout the month on ESPN’s coverage of The World Cup.
