Marduk Guitarist on ANTIFA Oakland Show Cancellation: ‘Every Circus Has Its Clown’

Marduk was involved in some controversy last month when an Oakland, Calif. show was cancelled due to potential ANTIFA protests. In a new interview, Marduk guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson commented on the scrapped gig, claiming, “The world is really filled with re-ards, so s—t will always happen. Every circus has its clown.”

An ANTIFA group in California’s Bay Area began to speak out against Marduk and the band’s scheduled Oakland show due to the band’s lyrical content concerning Nazi and WWII themes. Though Oakland police correctly indicated there were no statements from Marduk throughout their career “indicating the band are white supremacists, nationalists or anti-immigrant,” authorities decided to cancel the gig in interest of public safety.

Concerning public safety, police referenced a recent riot in Berkeley which occurred in protest of a Milo Yiannopolous speaking engagement.

In a new interview with Metal Wani (above), Håkansson spoke about the Oakland cancellation. “The whole thing about that, I think, was really blown out of proportion. It’s actually a handful of kids who decide they wanna judge what people should listen to or see,” the guitarist said. “It’s the way they work there — not satisfied with anything in their lives, so they demonstrate and cause problems for other people. So I think it was really blown out of proportion. But the police decided to cancel it because of security reasons. Otherwise, the show would have happened, because the promoters wanted to do it, we wanted to do it. So it was just really blown out of proportion and giving air to those kind of people, so it was a bit re-arded. But we’ll be back over there. We’re going back already in August/September.”

Morgan continues, “The world is really filled with re-ards, so s—t will always happen. Every circus has its clown, so… whatever. S—t happens. I’m not gonna focus that much about it. We’ll get over it like we have done with a lot of problems in the past. So it’s no big deal.”

Marduk are currently touring Australia to promote their 2015 album, Frontschwein.
