letlive Miss Their Sixth Member… a Dog
It's an unseasonably warm November night in Los Angeles. On the "back porch" section of the House of Blues near the backstage doors. With Sunset Strip traffic and neon in the background, progressive post-hardcore sensations letlive. is finishing up dinner and getting ready to take the stage on the third night of the No Guts, No Glory tour. The trek also features Miss May I, Woe, Is Me, The Amity Affliction and headliners, Pierce the Veil.
The band is getting pumped. Their latest video, 'Renegade '86,' featuring footage from their recent European tour, has just been released and is getting an enthusiastic response. It's a hometown show for letlive so lots of friends and family are buzzing around the famed venue.
Yet something is missing - something is wrong.
"I'm just missing Cosby," says guitarist Jeff Sahyoun. "Me too," chimes in bassist Ryan Jay Johnson. "Cosby," frowns Jessica Giordano from the band's label, Epitaph Records. "He's sort of like our sixth member," adds guitarist Jean Nascimento. "I miss him, too."
Just who is Cosby and why is letlive. missing him so badly?
More than a year ago, while passing through a mall in Atlanta, the band saw a beautiful dog (a Papillon) that had been for sale at $1500 - but whose price had been slashed to $300 as the store prepared to ship him off to parts unknown. But the band had a plan and soon, Cosby (as they named him) found himself putting in thousands of miles back and forth across the United States, on tour with letlive.
"He's awesome," said Sahyoun. "He hangs at the merch table. He roams around during sound check, rides in the van with us - he just makes the road so much more fun. There's nothing like having a dog. We sneak him into hotels when we have to, fans gets to know him - he's part of us."
And just where is the four-legged furry rocker? In Colorado, staying at a band member's house until they can swing by and pick him up, mid-tour. They're just giving him a little break, but no doubt they are also missing the little guy very much.
About 20 minutes after posing for a few photos, the band was onstage, in high-gear as they blasted through another one of their trademark high energy sets. But afterwards, when they climbed in the van for the ride to the next city, you can be sure they were still missing Cosby - man's best friend - and band's best friend, too.
