Undoubtably, Joe Satriani is one of the greatest living guitarists, having proven his track record over nearly 40 years. He’s not stopping anytime soon, as the maestro has announced his upcoming 16th solo record, What Happens Next, which is out Jan. 12, as well as the 2018 edition of his G3 tour.

What Happens Next features Satriani and an excellent pair of musicians to back him up — Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath on bass and Red Hot Chili PeppersChad Smith on drums. It’s the first time Satriani and Smith have worked together since collaborating in Chickenfoot.

It’ll be the perfect backdrop to go into the upcoming G3 tour, where he will be joined by Dream Theater‘s John Petrucci and Def Leppard‘s Phil Collen. It’ll make for an insanely packed edition of the guitar tour, which has previously featured other guitar gods like Steve Vai, Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen and more.

Of the tour, Satriani says, “I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not. I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild, it’s everything you could want in a show.”

In addition, Satriani’s son ZZ will be releasing his new documentary, Beyond the Supernova. The doc shows Joe touring with his band and crew on their most recent Shockwave Supernova tour through Europe and Asia. The documentary debuts at the Mill Valley Film Festival this October.
