Metallica‘s upcoming appearance at Glastonbury is coming under some fire. While earlier this week, members of the band Mogwai took a few shots at the festival headliners over their musical prowess, this latest challenge actually has little to do with the band’s music. An online campaign has been launched to have the band removed from the bill because of James Hetfield‘s interest and support for hunting.

As was previously reported, Hetfield recently signed on to narrate an upcoming History Channel series titled ‘The Hunt.’ The eight-episode series, which starts on June 8, chronicles the hunt on Alaska’s Kodiak Island for a Kodiak brown bear, one of the largest predators on Earth.

Hetfield has never shied away from his love of hunting, but a new Facebook page launched by anti-hunting activists is calling for the band’s removal from the popular festival due to Hetfield support of big-game hunting. The Facebook page, titled “Remove Metallica From Glastonbury Festival,” states, “This page is an appeal to Glastonbury to remove Metallica from their lineup. We believe James Hetfield’s support of big-game hunting is incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury and brings its good name into disrepute.”

In a post on the site, the campaign organizers states, “I doubt very much that James Hetfield is the first high profile Big Game Hunter to grace Glastonbury’s stages, I’m sure there have been many. I do however doubt that any of them have had a prime time History Chanel show promoting his view that Big Game Hunting is a good thing to do on at the same time. This double exposure gives his views extra publicity and acceptability and this is where we can have an effect.”

As of this posting, the “Remove Metallica From Glastonbury Festival” Facebook page has over 15,000 likes.
